ESCOME IN THE NEWS
- Dr. Zezhang Zhu, Associate Professor, Dept. of Spine Surgery,Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, Nanjing, China, spent a week at the Emory Spine Center and visited ESCOME from January 12-16, 2009. Dr. Zhu attended clinic with Dr. Horton and other spine surgeons on Monday at the Emory Spine Center and spent rest of the week at the newly completed Emory Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital observing various spine surgeries conducted at the hospital. Dr. Zhu also spent time with ESCOME staff members during his visit discussing the program and its implementation, and offered valuable suggestions.



- Dr. Yan Wang, President-Elect of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association, and Professor & Director, 301 Orthopaedic Hospital of the General Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, visited ESCOME and the Emory Spine Center on Nov. 19, 2008, immediately following his participation at the 2008 COA National Meeting in Suzhou, China. Dr. Wang attended a research discussion session organized in his honor in the early morning with Emory Spine Surgeons and research fellows and spent the rest of the day meeting with ESCOME staff discussing how best to successfully launch the first ESCOME program in China. Dr. Wang was also given of tour of the ESCOME training facility at the Emory School of Medicine building, guided by Dr. Ira Schwartz, Director of Admissions and an Associate Dean of the Emory School of Medicine.

The ESCOME program is featured in the September 2008 issue of the AAOS Now, a monthly journal published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The article, written by Jennie McKee, is entitled "Bridging the spine care knowledge gap: ESCOME to launch spinal care training program for Chinese surgeons". The Emory Office of International Affairs & the Claus M. Halle Institute for Global Learning included the ESCOME program on its webpage "Emory in the World" which details Emory's key international accomplishements in 2007-2008. A summary paragraph on ESCOME is included in the "Emory and East Asia" section, and more details on ESCOME and its endeavours is published in the article "Emory Initiates Program to Train Chinese Spine Surgeons".

The ESCOME Executive Director, Dr. William H. Horton, and Jianli Zhao, the ESCOME Program Director, attended the ESCOME China Board Meeting held in Shenzhen, China, in July 2008. Dr. Horton and Jianli also visited several hospitals in Sichuan Province in China, near the center of the May 2008 earthquake. The hospitals visited during the trip were: West China Hospital of Sichuan University, Mianyang Orthopaedic Hospital, Mianyang #1 and #3 City Hospitals, and the West China Puji Hospital Sichuan-Tibet. During the visit, Dr. Horton spent time discussing individual cases with local spine surgeons in each hospital visited as well as issues related to spine care and how to make it more readily available to patients under the Chinese medical system.
